So many couples who are getting married in the first few months of the new year end up stressed out, and worried about money, because they don’t get their homework down prior to the holiday season. Think ahead – Sandy says you can’t expect your vendors to be available over the holidays to help you play catch up.

Set yourself up for many years of fun and friendly holidays with your new spouse’s family by using your very best “guest” manners when you start celebrating together. Don’t sit around and watch while others do the heavy lifting – throw yourself right into the middle and be the biggest helper there. Sandy says you’re setting the tone for how Thanksgiving will go for many years to come.

There are three things that brides and grooms put off most commonly, during their wedding planning. All three tasks could have been completely finished during the first week of wedding planning, but because the couple procrastinated, they’re stuck trying to complete their wedding homework at the very last minute, when everything is more stressful. Sandy says don’t put it off and screw yourselves!

There's a proper etiquette to seating divorced parents at your wedding, although Sandy says most of her brides' and grooms' parents are on friendly enough terms to share the front row. But not always. The most important thing is to tell everybody where they should sit before the actual
wedding ceremony so there is no awkwardness in front of  the guests and photographers.

Sandy got a puppy shortly after she got engaged, years ago. And she has a story to tell about why getting a puppy at the same time you’re planning a wedding is not a good idea. Puppies require a lot of time and attention. So does wedding planning. Puppies require petsitters. There are so many reasons that it’s a bad idea, and Sandy personally experienced most of them with her own destination wedding.

Groom Wanted a Shark

Themed weddings can be a fantastic way to celebrate your big day, and you’re not required to carry the theme through all of your events. It also makes planning the décor much easier. Sandy says the bride and groom, and at least some of their friends and family, have to be totally committed to the theme in order for it to work. But when it works, the results can be spectacular.

Shelby and Ciera at Wedding

Sandy interviews Arianne Fisher from WeddingMix to get the opinion of a veteran wedding pro on the whole meme shaming of the bride and groom who asked their breastfeeding wedding guest to nurse in a designated area. Arianne says that this wedding guest used her boobs as a weapon to hurt the bride and groom. She explains “overboobing” as an inappropriate way to breastfeed in public. She says there’s no way to gracefully breastfeed discretely in a dress you’d wear to a wedding. It’s an interesting take from somebody who has experience as a breastfeeding mother, multiple times over, and who also has unique insight as a wedding vendor.

The Meme and the Real Couple

Bride Shelby and groom Garrett have been shamed worldwide for asking nursing mothers at their wedding reception to breastfeed in an area they set up in the ladies room. Breastfeeding advocates have attacked via social media. All the tabloids have written about it. But nobody has talked to the bride and groom who are the subject of the wedding guest’s complaints. Until now. Shelby and Garrett explain what happened before, and after the wedding, in an exclusive interview with Sandy Malone.

2013 Sandy Malone Garrett and David Toasts

There are lots of ways to share your destination wedding travel information with your guests, but that’s only the first step. You have to make it as easy as possible for people to make their travel arrangements, accommodations reservations, and other travel plans, if they’re using your destination wedding as an excuse for a bigger vacation for themselves. In fact, guests are more likely to attend if they have options that allow them to build a trip that they want to go on, rather than simply booking to and from your wedding. Sandy says make it easy because the old adage is true: If you build it, they will come.

Evacuation

Exclusive interview with Andy Ramos, a Puerto Rican police officer who was evacuated from Vieques Island for medical treatment after Hurricane Maria. In this interview, Andy illustrates what's happening on this tiny island, is cut off from the rest of the world, with no water, no power, no Internet, or no cell service. The island doesn't have enough police, there's no gas to power the equipment needed to clean up, and many residents lost their homes. All the resources that the United States is sending seem to be assisting the main island of Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Tiny Vieques has been forgotten, and Andy paints a pictures of a community that has banded together, but is getting very restless, and needs immediate disaster relief. Please donate to the ViequesLove relief fund today to help!

The tiny island of Vieques, Puerto Rico has been pretty much forgotten by the rest of the world, as the media shows pics of flooding in San Juan. The Vieques community members who are not on the island have come together to create resources for sharing information. There are four satellite phones on the island, and that’s how folks are being accounted for following this Category 5 hurricane that made its Puerto Rican landfall in Vieques. Sandy explains that most safe Vieques residents are not listed on the government’s lists because there’s no power, water or cell service to the island. Community-sponsored resources are more accurate.

Sandy explains that although it’s very trendy to have a friend marry you, many places require the wedding officiant to be legally registered with their own local government. Sandy has always preached that there’s no difference in planning a same-sex wedding versus a traditional wedding with a bride and a groom. But that’s not entirely true. Path of Hurricane Irma-2017

Lots of places in the United States have recently been affected by hurricanes, and both hometown and destination brides and grooms will be scrambling from Puerto Rico to Texas to reschedule wedding plans. Some areas may be affected for much longer periods of time. In some cases, destinations will have to change if couples still want to get married this year. Sandy tells couples what to do if their wedding venue gets hit by a storm.

Those popular non-traditional wedding gowns in pale peach, blush, and hand-dyed silk swirls of color are eye-catching for sure, but they can create new challenges for giving wedding guests instructions about attire. Brides who really care about nobody wearing their color of the day need to take some steps to ensure that doesn’t happen.

For many brides, their wedding is the first time they’ve hosted a party of any size, and it’s a fantastic learning opportunity. In a day and age where most of us don’t go to finishing school to learn proper manners, the wedding is frequently the first time couples encounter many of these etiquette challenges. However, some brides feel that all wedding etiquette is outdated, and say it doesn’t apply to them. Sandy says brides may not realize that wedding etiquette goes both ways, and if you’re not going to be bothered with the niceties and effort that basic wedding etiquette requires, you should expect your guests to return the favor.

bridal dress

Last week’s Alfred Angelo Bridal closure left thousands of brides and bridesmaids in the lurch. But one luxury dress design company has stepped up to gift 50 sample wedding gowns to brides who have a receipt proving they paid for dresses they bought but did not receive from Alfred Angelo. While many bridal vendors are offering deep discounts to dress-less-brides, this is by far one of the most generous opportunities out there for brides who are in a pinch. Check out Sandy’s blog (http://sandymalone.com/luxury-bridal-designer-is-gifting-50-wedding-gowns-to-alfred-angelo-victims/) with the details on how to sign up, and listen for more details!

A major bridal designer devastated thousands of women by closing its doors with no notice last week. Hundreds of women rushed to their local Alfred Angelo Bridal in the slightest hope they could actually pick up their already paid-for gowns, altered or not. Some brides were lucky, but more were not. And hundreds were left with wedding party orders partially fulfilled, or gone altogether. Other businesses and brides are stepping up to the plate in the wake of what easily be called the biggest wedding dress disaster this industry has ever seen.

El Covento Hotel Photo

If you’re visiting San Juan, Puerto Rico, you MUST visit the El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan. It’s the only hotel in San Juan that made the book of "1,000 Places to Visit Before You Die," and in Sandy’s opinion, it belongs on every traveler’s bucket list. The historic property is luxuriously appointed, and the perfect romantic place to stay on a stopover for a honeymoon cruise, or when you’re heading off to yet another island. It’s walking distance from everything that matters in Old San Juan.

Conquistador-

Most brides and grooms probably consider a wedding on a private Caribbean island above their budget. But that's not always true. Palomino Island at the El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico is a private tropical paradise where brides and grooms can say I do with their closest friends and family or just the local horses that live there. No request is too over the top - if you can afford it. Hear what Sandy thinks of El Conquistador as a wedding

No matter how bitter you may be if your engagement ends, the simple fact is that you have to return the engagement ring to your fiancé. Whether you’re legally obligated to return it depends on the laws in your state, but most of the time, you cannot keep an engagement ring unless you actually do the deed and say “I do.” Sandy says to take the high road and return the ring without having to be asked.

Destination Wedding Flower Girl and Ring Bearer

Lots of brides and grooms ask their littlest loved ones to be members of the wedding party, but it’s important to have a plan to manage the kids during the ceremony and reception. Sure, those viral videos of ring bearers with their pants around their ankles are hilarious. But draws attention away from the bride and groom and makes the ceremony less serious. Maybe that’s what you want, but if not, there’s a way to plan ahead so that you
little ones are a part of things but not the center of attention all day.

 DIY Favors

It’s become almost trendy to list a charitable organization among your list of wedding registries, so that guests may donate to the charity of your choice as a wedding gift. But what about when the bride and groom opt to forego a wedding detail or tradition to give that money to a good cause? Certainly, it’s never bad to give to charity. But Sandy says to think twice about how you go about announcing, and taking credit, for it.

chalk board No Nude Dads

No parent at their child’s wedding reception should take their clothes off. If your dad has a tendency to get naked when he’s drunk, you need to assign somebody to babysit him at your wedding. It’s not cute, it’s not funny. It won’t make for a memorable wedding in a good way. The staff shouldn’t be subjected to your dad’s nakedness, even if you’re okay with your friends seeing your pops in his altogether. Sandy tells the true stories of two occasions when the Father of the Bride got stark naked and passed out in the middle of a wedding.

shamrock garter

Sandy tells the story of a bride and groom who asked her to plan a St. Patrick’s Day wedding theme for their Caribbean destination wedding on the actual holiday. The flowers were green, the beer was green, the wedding cake was made of Guinness beer, and an actual leprechaun greeted wedding guests as they arrived at cocktails.

Here's a link to the blog Sandy wrote for the HuffPost shortly after the wedding she describes in this podcast.

ferry to and from Vieques, PR

Sandy tells a true story about a group of wedding guests who missed a ferry, setting off a chain reaction that could have resulted in 17 guests having to buy new plane tickets home. Fortunately, with a little help from her friends and her husband Bill, Sandy was able to get everybody on a charter flight to the big airport, where they caught their flights home on time. Sandy and Bill

It’s so easy to fall in love with a big, poufy silk ball gown for your wedding, but if you’re having a destination wedding, less is more. Before you start trying on wedding dresses, consider what kind of fabrics are most conducive to the weather. Consider organza instead of silk so that you don’t melt. Remember, if you feel miserably hot, you probably look miserable, too.
