Sandy interviews social media and wedding expert Ariane Fisher about the most common hashtag mistakes made by brides and grooms. Ariane explains why counting on Instagram to collect your pictures and videos isn’t a good idea, and how hashtag generators can help you avoid being lumped in with everybody else.

 sparkler wedding

You either love them or hate them. Sandy got married on Labor Day weekend, and yet, she's not a fan. Lots of your guests have annual family traditions and commitments during holidays so you have to poll the group if you don't want to risk not having some of your friends attend your holiday wedding weekend.

Traditionally, if you have a sister, you’re supposed to ask her to be your Maid of Honor. But that’s changed, and many brides are as close to, or closer to, their bffs as their own siblings. But before you skip your sister, be sure to talk to her about her feelings on the matter so you don’t do something hurtful that won’t be forgotten for a really long time, if ever.

There's nothing pleasant about cancelling a wedding, but dealing with returning all the gifts may be one of the most embarrassing, and labor-intensive, tasks you'll face. Especially if your date was near and you've gotten lots of things. Sandy says you must try to return everything because those were gifts to celebrate an event that isn't going to happen.

WeddingMix founder Ariana Fisher

Lots of couples don’t think they can afford to have a wedding video, but that’s not true anymore. WeddingMix, a company headed by Ariane Fisher, has revolutionized the DIY wedding video process in a way that lets brides and grooms and their guests document the big day, and offers assistance organizing and creating the final product. Sandy interviews Ariane about why it’s so important to have a video, traditional or DIY, and her company’s new app!

Unforeseen circumstances can occur that force a couple to move their wedding date. If you’re organized in your approach to the vendors, you’ll lose a lot less money in the process. Rescheduling your wedding in the same place is always less expensive than starting from scratch the second time. Sandy says to have two new wedding dates in mind before you contact your vendors so you have options.

Make sure you discuss all the difficult topics – finances, baggage, sex – with your fiancé before you actually get married. Sandy’s guest, Elizabeth Carroll, the star of WEtv’s “Marriage Boot Camp,” says a strong marriage foundation comes from having the tough conversations before you actually get married. Premarital counseling can be a great way to dig into the difficult subjects that are hard to approach on your own. Elizabeth says she doesn’t want other couples to go through what she did with her own failed marriage.

Although brides and grooms don’t get married in June for the original reason anymore (thank goodness!), June – and summertime weddings in general – remain wildly popular. Why? Sandy explains the benefits of getting married during the summer months, and why that tradition is still trendy today.

It’s tacky to post ANYTHING negative about your relationship on social media, but it’s even worst to put your own cancelled wedding on blast. Sandy says to take the high road – don’t post anything about the demise of your engagement. The people who need to know should find out directly from you, and the rest of your “friends” don’t need the nitty-gritty details.

As lovely as the tradition is of having the Father of the Bride (and the Father of the Groom) toast at the wedding, sometimes dads say the darnedest things! Sandy says to prepare your remarks in advance, only talk for a few minutes, and remember WHY you’re toasting in the first place, so you don’t create the kind of memories nobody wants.

There's a proper etiquette to seating divorced parents at your wedding, although Sandy says most of her brides' and grooms' parents are on friendly enough terms to share the front row. But not always. The most important thing is to tell everybody where they should sit before the actual
wedding ceremony so there is no awkwardness in front of  the guests and photographers.

Garrett & David Recessional

Same-sex weddings give brides and grooms the opportunity to make up their own rules about where they want to seat their parents, and in what order. The logistics of the ceremony are the same, but your VIP guests need
to know where they're supposed to be, and when. It really doesn't matter what order they go in as long as both moms are happy. Sandy says it's time to establish a new baseline for how things are done.

Most singles will tell you they want to be able to bring a date when they’re invited to a wedding. But later, when they’re the bride and groom who are paying the wedding tab, they often feel differently. Sandy breaks down the rules on who you have to invite, and who you do not have to invite, to your wedding festivities.

Cute Ring Bearer

Sandy explains that it’s a good idea to have at least the appearance of security staff on hand at a wedding that’s likely to be a big party scene. How do the pros do it? Wedding planners take their cues about what kind of antics to expect from things the brides and grooms tell them. The bride and groom really know how out of control their group might be.

It can be very difficult for divorced or single parents of the bride and groom at weddings, especially if the other spouse isn’t alone. Sandy on the PhoneSandy gets a lot of calls from angry brides who want to fire their wedding planners. She listens carefully and then tells them what not to do if they don’t want to screw up their weddings in the process.

Needing to fire your wedding planner is a worst case scenario in wedding planning. Sandy strongly advises brides and grooms to think carefully before doing so, and make sure they have all the details of their wedding plans and each individual vendor before they cut the cord. No matter how bad things have been, try not to burn any bridges until after the wedding day, even if you’ve fired the planner. Remember, she’s hired the vendors she works with regularly. You don’t need a burned bridge with the planner to result in having your entire wedding explode.

If the destination has wild horses, chickens, frogs or any other native wildlife, they’re going to be there for your wedding, whether you invite them or not.

“Sandy’s mom didn’t get to plan her wedding, but she certainly stepped up to the plate to help finish all the little details when the wedding planner dropped the ball back in 2004” Left to right, Robin Corridon, Sandy, and Sandy’s godmother the Rev. Nan Chandler.

Sandy’s mom didn’t get to plan her wedding, but she certainly stepped up to the plate to help finish all the little details when the wedding planner dropped the ball back in 2004 Left to right, Robin Corridon, Sandy, and Sandy’s godmother the Rev. Nan Chandle.

The mothers of today’s brides and grooms got screwed out of wedding planning. Their parents planned their weddings, and they always thought they would have the bulk of the say in their own daughter’s wedding.
But times have changed and brides and grooms prefer to do most of the planning together, without parents interference. How you feel about that and how you deal with it can have a real impact on your enjoyment of the wedding.

Sometimes your initial wedding plans change because somebody important can’t travel or the budget doesn’t allow for what you initially wanted to do. Keep the details of your dream wedding to yourself until after the everything is finalized and the contracts are signed, or you might find yourself in an embarrassing situation.

Many grooms don’t ask for much when we’re planning the wedding. But when they do express their opinion, it should always be taken into consideration and included, if it’s possible. And let’s face it, almost anything is possible. Sandy shares a story about how she fulfilled the unique wedding requests from a recent groom.

The Shark Video– This is a video that actually shows their grand entrance with the shark!
But, keep listening to my podcast! How we hooked the shark is a great story!

DJ Paul Gonzalez Chavez with Weddings in Vieques Account Executive Kelsi Welch, coordinating timing of announcements during an event.

Technology hasn’t done wedding couples any favors by making them think all they need to do is create a music playlist and pop it into an iPod dock at their wedding reception. Nor is it a good idea to use one of your besties as the DJ if you actually want things to happen on schedule. Sandy explains why using a professional DJ at weddings is so important.
